Three Things 6.29.08

Three Things About Today:

1) The more sleep I get, the more sleep my body wants. It's constantly greedy for even more. For the first time in almost five months we are finally getting several consecutive hours of sleep. Alex is sleeping through the night (mostly) and Max is well on his way.  WIth each extra hour of sleep I get per night, I am seemingly that much more tired the next day.  It seems as if the adrenaline supply I've been living on since February is finally reaching peak reserves.  A few years ago I read an article on the subject of  "gourmet naps". While I don't entirely remember the premise the concept sounds appetizing enough to me. At this point who cares about the gourmet part.. I'm happy with even a twenty minute snooze.

2) So this one isn't really about today but since I'm still drooling over it, I'll blog it too. We joined Patrick's family on Friday night for a birthday dinner hosted by his fabulous Aunt Irene.  Anyone who's ever been to Irene's house knows she is the fantastic cook. We never pass up an invitation to join her for dinner because if Irene's cookin' you KNOW it's gonna be good.  This time was no exception. Everything was delicious from the brisket to the red enchiladas and tamales to the salads.. I could go on and on.  But then we got to the CAKE... the chocolate cake. Let me preface this entire statement by saying not only am I not a big fan of cake, I'm also not that crazy for chocolate.

It was..... hands down ....THE BEST CAKE I'VE EVER HAD. E-V-E-R.

Not only was it made entirely from scratch (frosting and all) ,it's chocolately goodness was a wonderful composition of moist, gooey, perfection that can only be described as "yummmmmmmmmm... cake".

And the best part? She gave us the leftover cake to take home and it was unbelieveably even more delicious the next morning. It sadly didn't last beyond one meal. I've informed Patrick that all I want for my birthday is another cake.   I'm totally and blissfully in love.

3)  Blogging about gourmet naps and chocolate cake? Truly the pondering of a mommy to newborns.

Congratulations! You've Just Played Your 1000th Game Of Hide N' Go Seek

We can't be positive but Patrick and I may have played our 1000th game of Hide N' Go Seek with Sophia today. The girl LIVES for the game.  She spends a good part of her day running from room to room shouting "Oh Mommy (or Daddy), Where's your Sophia Lou?" At which point she throws a blanket over her head and laughs hysterically at both her cleverness and the building anticipation of the "seekers" arrival.

That's right. She doesn't even really hide.

Just throws a blanket over herself and waits. EVERY TIME.

At first it was sorta cute and funny. You know, little kids, missing the point of hiding and all. But we made the mistake early on of pretending not to see her standing in the middle of the room covered by a little blanket. We would just go on and on calling "Oh Sophia. Are you in here? Are you in the kitchen? Are you in the bedroom? etc etc".

By doing such a good job at "overlooking" the uncontrollable laughter coming from under the increasingly smaller blankets, we inadvertently gave her the impression that either

A) She is a skilled and masterful hider or B) We are ignorant and grossly incompetent finders.

Along the way we've tried numerous ways to appropriately educate her on how the game is really played. For example one parent will hide with her (in a real hiding spot even!) while the other parents seeks.  One problem we've encountered with that method is that as soon the seeker calls out "Ready or not, here I come!" Sophia either starts shouting the exact whereabouts of her location or runs out of the hiding spot at full speed in an effort to "catch" the seeker. Evidently we need to clarify the differences between "Hide N Seek" and "Tag, You're It".

Despite the "joy" we get from finding her under blankets several dozen times a day there really is something great in seeing how much excitement she gets from the game. It truly never gets old for her and the reaction over being found is never dull. She is genuinely THRILLED each and every time.

Wouldn't it be great if we could all find so much joy in little things again?

It's On Like Donkey Kong

Ok, Here's the real story. I spent 25 mins. writing a Cleaver (Ward that is...no maybe Wally) witty post which included a pledge to my lovely wife to blog for our family that included a reference to the top 10 video games of the 80's while making fun of my age (birthday on Fri.) along the way.  Then my computer froze and deleted the whole damn thing. Yes I said damn as I am quite perturbed right now and may very well hurl this computer across this slightly awkward shaped room.

Hey, now that I think about it, Cristal may have done something to cause this to happen as she also calls me Flanders (Simpson's reference) sometimes due to my Oakalie Doakalie cornball comedic reference (or lack there of)...Just Kidding Love.

Anyhow, I will accept your challenge and although I can not promise how often I will write posts and just how great I will be of a Blogger, I do promise to you and our family my love and dedication forever as long as it doesn't interfere with my ability to play Frogger (or Donkey Kong. or any video game, or sporting event on TV, or athletic competition on TV, or anything that isn't blogging).  Once again just kidding...look for more Daddio posts in the future!

Here's a shout out to all of you reading this post who I (we) haven't spoken to or caught up with for a long time.  You know who you are Zander, Maxidoscious, Sophia Lou, Mamadows, Maxy, Acorns, Big Smiles, Honey Sunshine, Squirmy, Belly Fart, PoopTastic, Drool Boy, Cry Man, Never Sleep, Boob Lover and Ray Ray.  Wait a minute I think those (Some of them anyhow) are the nicknames of some of the meanest gang members in Las Cruces. The Campos Nelson Clan!

---Patrick

I'm Calling You Out Nelson

When Patrick and I started dating rather than adopt a cutsie petname like "honey or sweetheart" I often referred to him as "Mr. Nelson".  Not sure why the "Mr." part. Perhaps because he's a tad bit older than me (give or take seven years) :) or because he seemed so much more sophisticated and worldly than me (nah, I think it was the age thing). Anyhow several years later and I've dropped the "Mr." leaving only the Nelson. As in "Are you kidding me, Nelson. Golf again?" or "Hey Nelson, which baby do want to be in charge of tonight?".

But I digress... It occurred to when I was posting our "And Babies Make Five" entry that the voice of my dear Mr. Nelson is notably absent from our "Campos Nelson Family" blog.  I feel fairly confident in saying that finding out about our twins was the biggest shock of our lives, but truth be told it would be far more interesting hearing from his perspective how life around the Campos Nelson household has been since that day forward.

So here's my open challenge to YOU... Yes, you Nelson! I would love to enrich the perspective of our family blog  with regular entries or commentary by the Head of Familia. (No, not me silly! I mean you!) I know you're a busy man (boy do I ever) but just think of how valuable your perspective on our family adventures will be to the kids years from now.  (Okay, guilt trip over).

So whatdaya say Nelson? You up to the challenge?

And Babies Make Five

A couple of nights ago I went out to dinner with a few members of the local parents of multiples group. (Funny to think that between only 7 of us we have almost 20 kids). Not only is it nice to get out for a few hours for a little adult conversation but having people to talk with who have gone through the twinfant experience truly is a wonderful thing. Among a few of the favorite topics that parents of multiples discuss upon meeting are: (Okay the Mom's discuss this stuff. I have no idea what the Dad's talk about. I asked Patrick and he said mostly sports.  Go figure!)

1) What week did you get to and how much did they weigh (i.e. how early where your babies born.  The vast majority of twin births occur by 38 weeks. We made it to 40, placing us in the less than 2% category. Fun!)

2) Are your twins mo-mo, mo-di, di-di? (i.e. Identical or Fraternal). We don't have a conclusive answer for the boys but based on how they look our best guess is fraternal.

3) Are you considering plastic surgery, which is typically proceeded by all the gory details of what carrying twins has done to your body (I'm only partly kidding on this one. Twins have a funny way of changing the long term elasticity of your mid section.. very lovely)

4) What did you think/do/feel when you found out it was twins?

So in the spirit of sharing experiences, here's our story.

One year ago yesterday  (June 21st 2007) Patrick and I had our first OB visit scheduled. (I say "we" because he never missed an OB appointment throughout my pregnancy with Sophia. This pregnancy was no different.  I know, I know.. what a catch, right!) We dropped Sophia off with our friend Shan and headed to the Dr's office. This first visit was described as a "get to know you visit" with lots of questions and paperwork but no real tests or face to face with a doctor.

Towards the end of the visit I mentioned to the nurse  that I hadn't had any pregnancy symptoms yet but had for the last few days been experiencing sharp pains in my lower abdomen along with a few other strange symptoms.  After further discussion she determined that the pain I was describing was consistent with an ectopic pregnancy.  Upon hearing those words my heart dropped. There is never a positive outcome for that diagnosis and in all cases the pregnancy must be terminated or risk a life threatening situation for the mother.  Although she assured us that she was just being conservative in her approach, she quickly called around and had us scheduled for an ultrasound at the hospital within the next hour.  I'm sure she counseled us further on what to expect but honestly all I remember is my mind spinning at the possibility of such a terrible reality.

On our way to the hospital Patrick and I discussed what we would do if it did turn out to be a tubal pregnancy but I still couldn't get my mind around the fact that all we'd gone in for was a routine OB visit but could be heading home later that day having lost the pregnancy. How would we deal with that? True to my first impulse, I said a silent prayer that we avoid the worst outcome that day.

What seemed like hours later (but in actuality was probably only 30 minutes) we were admitted to the hospital and the ultrasound was underway. The sonographer began the exam very detached  (I'm sure breaking that kind of news is terrible) but after several minutes of looking in different angles announced "I don't know how to tell you guys this"..... (Okay, so possibly not the best way for her to begin her statement. We were after all been studying her every little move, word and expression for the slightest indication of what she was about to tell us).... but there are TWO of them".

So at this point my mind is blown and I'm really struggling to understand what she just stated. Two of what?  Two tubes, two possibilities, two outcomes. Two diagnosis. Two of WHAT????

I don't clearly remember what I asked or what she said next but it quickly became evident that she meant babies. TWO BABIES. No, madam. You must have it wrong. That is not EVEN possible. So I told her "No, you are wrong. Check again!!" and which point she proceeded to not only show us the beginnings of both babies but two tiny beating hearts.

At this point the room was really spinning. I had mentally prepared myself for the loss of one baby that day but had NEVER imagined the possibility of twins. That scenario had never even entered my mind. THIS COULD NOT BE!  We were just not prepared for two babies!

Prepared or not, there we sat looking at a dark screen and two clearly identifiable flashing heartbeats. (Wow, wow, WOW! Somebody get me a drink! No, wait! I can't even have a %&#^@ drink now!)

Funny part (if you can all it that) is that Patrick completely saw it coming and knew what she was about to say before she even finished her sentence. Although I couldn't see the ultrasound screen from my vantage point, he could and while she did her examination he was able to see the two round spheres that were very obviously different from the ultrasounds he's seen throughout our pregnancy with Sophia. Thanks for the heads up Patrick! :)

While she completed the ultrasound to check for measurement, approximate due date etc Patrick and I jabbered on in a shell shocked state. I know he mentioned the urgency of needing to get back to work QUICK! and one of us determined that we'd now need a minivan to get all the car seats to fit. The crazy things you think of when your life has just taken a major shift!

As soon as we left the hospital I called my mom at work (who was shocked) and Patrick called his mom (also shocked) and we went to pick up Sophia. (As a side note our friend Shannon, who says we looked like deer caught in the headlights when we arrived for Sophia that day, was not shocked. In fact when I said to her "You'll never believe what happened!" she responded by asking "How many are there?" I'm going to let her pick my next powerball lotto numbers.)

So here we are one year later.

Two incredibly amazing baby boys later and we couldn't be more blessed or happy.

Three Things 6.18.08

Three Things About Today:

1) I rarely laugh out loud when watching tv/movies/stand up comedy etc. I'm just not that kind of person. It think things are amusing, funny, hilarious even...still no laughter. The one exception is The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.  Not an episode goes by when I don't find myself laughing out loud...hard.  It's a great way to end the day.  (In close second is The Colbert Report, which I am currently attempting to watch between posting..love it!)

2) Had the best time with Sophia on the way to the store tonight. She was "rapping" to this song as we drove... "One, Two Buckle My Shoe, Three Four Shut the Door etc etc"  Not the traditional way the song is sang but to this little hip hop beat.  So I'm watching her through the rearview mirror and she's totally getting into it. Head bopping, hitting every word, even making UGH sounds to emphasize her enthusiasm for the song. It was in a word.. priceless.  When did she get so darn cute?

3) I must admit I've been a bad, bad friend. I have a running list of great and hopefully understanding (Crossing Fingers) friends who I owe emails or phone calls.  If you're one of them I apologize.  I would sincerely love to catch up but prefer to wait until all three munchkins are asleep or out of earshot at least. Beyond that I have a hundred other excuses but I'd rather just say sorry and hope that I'll do better tomorrow.

Three Things 6.17.08

Three Things About Today:

1) Thanks to Patrick I was able to enjoy an extra hour of sleep.

2) While I did spend some quiet one-on-one time with Sophia reading while the boys napped I regret that those moments have become more and more rare. I really should make more of an effort.

3) It's was so hot today that I didn't step outside for even a few seconds. I never thought I'd be one to love cold, snowy weather but it beats several days of 100 plus weather anyday. How long until Fall?

When I Grows Up

During a recent conversation

Sophia: I want to be a doctor when I grows up.

Dad: That's great honey. Why do you want to be a doctor?

Sophia: So I can help sick little boys and girls.

Dad: How wonderful. You can be ANYTHING you want to be.

Sophia : Oh, and I also want to be an armadillo so I can curl up into a little ball and roll down hills.

At least she has a dream! :)

It's 8am and all is great!

Because I actually got some sleep last night. Granted that meant that I was wedged between two little babies but the point is I slept for longer than 1 hour long increments.  AND on top of all that I was able to take an afternoon nap yesterday (thanks Sonia for sticking around) AND when Alex woke up at a quarter to six this morning Patrick took him out of the room so I could sleep even longer AND when Sophia woke up at 6:30 Patrick made her breakfast so I could sleep longer (thanks love) AND since Alex fell back asleep so it's approx. 8am and I still have two sleeping babies. Nice!

May not seem like much but after the hard core sleep depravation that went on last week (with illness, a move to a new crib and room, possible teething and "un"swaddling attempts being the culprits) it's especially exciting. I'm not even sure what to do with all this energy and free time. Maybe I'll even get to (gasp) shower before noon today!  Now that would be exciting!

Misadventures in Colorado

Colorado Vacation

Forever Trying to Catch Up

It was one those weeks. On top of catching up and recovering from our vacation we took turns sharing a cold/stomach flu virus whicheveryone seems to have finally recouped from.  Luckily my parents were in town for a few days and were a huge help in playing triage with three sick kiddos.  Between rocking babies to sleep and administering doses of medicine we were able to enjoy Father's Day weekend together. As always, it was sad to seem them leave but I'm grateful that the move pack to New Mexico means it won't be 6 plus months until the next time we seem them again.

Here are a couple of pics from over the weekend. Colorado Trip Pics to be Added Soon (soon as I get some sleep and can put together a Picasa Album) :)

Time for a Little Catch Up

You know the feeling. Something you (want/need) to do keeps getting put off for another day until eventually you feel so far behind that you put it off EVEN LONGER and keep repeating the ugly cycle until it no longer seems worth it to even try and catch up...... Sadly this has been the case with our poor neglected blog.

To make a long story short about 12 days ago we packed up the ole' familia and headed North! to Colorado. We spent a wonderful week with friends and arrived home early Sunday morning, exhausted, a little crabby but with a wealth of great experiences and memories. MANY MANY MANY thanks to the Decker and Stark families for having us. You knew we'd be arriving with a two year old and two four month olds ... and still you welcomed us. Saints in the making!

Besides playing catch up over the last few days we have also finally transitioned the boys out of thier swaddle blankets at night and into their own cribs and room.

That has been interesting....

Anyhow this is my feable attempt at digging myself out of the ugly procrastinators cycle. I will post pics from our trip as soon as I get another free minute.. promise. :)
